About The Event
This is a bouncy, groove-centred class, with a focus on fun! This is intended to give you ideas of ways to move that you can work on yourself. This class is all about play, so expect upbeat songs, spanning decades! It is not choreography focussed, meaning you only need to focus on short patterns at a time.
By moving right to the extremeties of our bodies, we will connect mind and body with music to groove to!
This class is deisgned to be drop-in, so come whenever you can.
No previous dance experience is necessary, though we do think you will get more from this class if you are able to stand still, roll forwards and step from side to side on your roller skates. If you're not quite there, we do have ways to support you in class.
Fundamental roller dance skills will allow you to fully develop and understand body position and how this can support you.
Roller dance is great fun and suitable for small spaces!
Why do we love roller dance so much?
- It fosters a sense of belonging when folks are able to dance together. Roller dance is incrdibly powerful and we have had the privilege of being in spaces where skaters don't speak the same language, but are able to join in with the same steps in dance.
- It supports fantastic footwork and technique that will support all other forms of roller skating. Especially balance.
- It doesn't require a lot of room, so you can practise in a smaller space - like The Skate Sanctuary!
- It's great fun.
- It's a fabulous warm up
- You will become a more confident skater and learn to be more patient with yourself.
What size hire skates do I need?
We recommend you ask for your regular shoe size. If you try skates on and they're not right for you, we are happy to swap them. Our skate hire is available in full sizes only, from UK 3 - UK 12. You no longer need to book a specific ticket to tell us what size you require.
Do I need to sign a waiver?
Yes, everyone who skates with Roller Girl Gang needs to sign a waiver. For sessions at The Skate Sanctuary, you will complete a paper waiver the first time you come. This will be kept securely in digital form for one year, so that you do not need to sign each time. We ask that you let us know if your circumstances change, including emergency contact details.
I have a Skate Pass, do I still need to book?
Yes, please still book your spot. Please remember that if you are not able to make it, our cancellation policy does still apply.
Can I bring my own refreshments?
Yes, no problem! If you forget, we do offer soft drinks and just ask if you need your water bottle refilling. Please make sure you are not eating and drinking while you skate, that includes chewing gum.
I wear inline skates, can I come?
Yup. We welcome all wheely-booted folks. You may find some skills do not translate directly to inline skates, however we can all do our best.
I don't identify as a girl, can I come?
Absolutely! Roller Girl Gang was founded and is run by women, with the support of our fantastic volunteer team, to provide better access to roller skating for all genders and identities, especially marginalised folks.
What do I do if I have a problem?
Please speak to one of our skate marshall volunteers, who wear purple t-shirts. If they are unable to help you, they will find our lead skate marshall, who will do their best to assist. We have a Respect policy in place to keep everyone feeling as safe and supported as possible. In case of accidents, we always have at least one trained first aider in the room.
Will the shop be open during class?
As it is within The Skate Sanctuary, it is no problem to collect an order or check out items you may need. We are not able to support skate fittings during class though.
How do I find the venue?
The Skate Sanctuary is near Aldi on Harrogate road, just off Macaulay Street on one side, and Mabgate on the other. Access to Mabgate Mills is via Macaulay street and there is free parking at the venue after 5.30pm and at weekends.
