About The Event
It's that time of year when there is a fabulous celebration of the roller skate community in Barcelona. Â For those who are not putting wheels on the ground in Spain this year, come to The Skate Sanctuary and celebrate skate culture with us - Yorkshire style!
Pick and choose parts of the day that suit you.Â
12noon - 4pm - CRAFTERNOON - Make your own festival outfit
Fashion upcycling and crafts in the studio. Â Make your own festival outfit, using clothing you already have. September is sustainable fashion month, so bring your jacket to be blinged up, your shoes to be painted and belts to bedazzle. Â Old t-shirts can be given a make over with fabric paints or cut them up cleverly to make something entirely new! Â All materials and equipment will be provided. Â If you have a craft skill you'd like to share or have any craft equipment donations, please let us know. Â
We are asking for pay-as-you-feel donations of at least £5 to cover the cost of the craft products.  Suggested donation £10
4pm - 6pm  - YORKSHIRE TAPAS
Bring some food for our tapas table - this is a bit of a pot luck!  Register to let us know if you are bringing something savoury, something sweet or something that is suitable for those with food allergies, intolerances or special dietary requirements (including you!) Suggested spend £10
Please support us by buying your soft drinks, tea and coffee. We offer fresh coffee and plant based (oat) or dairy milk.
6pm - 9pm - SANCTUARY SATURDAY DISCOTHEQUE
It's disco time, for folks who enjoy dancing, but also an early night.  Remember that outfit you jazzed up earlier - time to model it, as we flip our studio into disco-mode.  Dance in shoes or skates as you pull some shapes.  If you've been attending all those roller dance classes, now is the time to bust-a-move! We've got DJ Tino di Placido on the decks - he is coming out of retirements for one night only! We are thrilled to have such a fabulous DJ - he had residencies at clubs in Leeds and London  over the years - at our party!
Ticket £10
FAQs
What does 'Skate Friendly' mean?
Our studio is a smaller, more intimate space than a sports hall, intended to encourage people to connect through movement. Â That means, people may be dancing in shoes OR skates. Â As well as connection, The Skate Sanctuary is a place to develop new skills. It is not a space for fast laps during public sessions - you will be asked to stop if we feel other people are having to compromise their movement by staying out of your way. If you refuse to alter your skating, we may ask you to leave and no refund will be given. Â If you really want to skate fast at The Skate Sanctuary, please book a private session!
Can I hire skates?
Yes, you can hire skates or protective equipment for £2.
Do I need to sign a waiver?
Yes, everyone who skates with Roller Girl Gang needs to sign a waiver.  For sessions at The Skate Sanctuary, you will complete a paper waiver the first time you come. This will be kept securely in digital form for one year, so that you do not need to sign each time. We ask that you let us know if your circumstances change, including  emergency contact details.
I have a Skate Pass, do I still need to book?
Yes, please still book your spot. Â Please remember that if you are not able to make it, our cancellation policy does still apply.
Can I bring my own refreshments?
Please support us by buying our soft drinks and snacks. Â Of course please bring your own refillable water bottle though.! Â Please make sure you are not eating and drinking while you skate, that includes chewing gum.
I wear inline skates, can I come?
Yup. We welcome all wheely-booted folks. You may find some skills do not translate directly to inline skates, however we can all do our best.
I don't identify as a girl, can I come?
Absolutely! Â Roller Girl Gang was founded and is run by women, with the support of our fantastic volunteer team, to provide better access to roller skating for all genders and identities, especially marginalised folks.
What do I do if I have a problem?
Please speak to one of our staff if you need assistance. We have a Respect policy in place to keep everyone feeling as safe and supported as possible. In case of accidents, we always have at least one trained first aider in the room.
Will the shop be open?
As it is within The Skate Sanctuary, it is no problem to collect an order or check out items you may need. Â We are not able to support skate fittings during the disco though.
How do I find the venue?
The Skate Sanctuary is near Aldi on Harrogate road, just off Macaulay Street on one side, and Mabgate on the other. Â Access to Mabgate Mills is via Macaulay street and there is free parking at the venue after 5.30pm and at weekends.
Bus stops are on Harrogate Road / A61 (number 42 bus)
