New Art Competition! Calling artists and designers!

Updated: Aug 25

We love to support and uplift artists and designers within the skate community. This year, instead of us approaching an artist, we invite you to create our next t-shirt design.

Grand prize : £300 cash or £350 shop voucher & your design on a t-shirt, and a t-shirt in your chosen size.

Runner up: £50 shop voucher & your design turned into a sticker.

Read on for details of how to enter.

For years now, we have commissioned artists to create designs for Roller Girl Gang that are then used to print onto limited edition merchandise. If you miss it, you miss out!

Here are a couple of our more recent designs, and the story behind them.

Roller Skating is for Every Body by Sophies Stitching

Embroidered design

Do you remember this stunning design from 2020? We commissioned body positive embroidery artist Sophies Stitching to create a unique piece, which was later turned into a digital design. We specifically asked her to split 'everybody' so that it reads 'every BODY'. The subtle difference in meaning we hope supports those folks who may have found sport to be non-inclusive for them. We believe there is an activity and a group for everyone, to meet your needs at a particular time in your life.

We decided to bring this design back in 2022 in a simplified bold line drawing (and on a white t-shirt, as we know the creatives among the you will want to tie dye this!)

Tattoo Style Skate with British Flora & Fauna

Line drawing

In 2021, we asked skater and tattoo artist Jodie @cosmicxbambi to create this beautiful piece. We have seen quite a few designs that are similar, but look closely, and you'll see British flora and fauna. We wanted it to be subtly known that our company hails from Yorkshire, UK. The t-shirt became the final gift in our subscription box 'My Roller Skate Journey' in December 2021, and there were a few extra t-shirts available too.

We re-printed this in early 2022 onto gigantic canvas shopper bags, with a stunning gold on black, or black on grey, so this design can be used every day. Our tote bags are big enough to fit a roller skate box in them, and more recently, Mel used hers as carry on luggage on her trip to Paris!

While we are here, we'd love to say a massive thank you to Jasmine, Danny and the team at Flippin' Sweet UK, who are our preferred t-shirt printer. (They're also a small business AND based in Yorkshire.) Thank you Flippin' Sweet for looking after us, and bringing these designs to life! We love that we have an opportunity to support another small business, and that the eco-friendly water-based inks are really hard wearing.

The Competition

What are we looking for?

We are looking for a design that reflects our values and ethos.

It can be a pattern, picture or graphic words. We would like a maximum of 3 colours to be used, which includes black and white.

We are looking to support a skater - though it doesn't matter where you are on your skate journey, or where you got your skates from (you don't need to have purchased roller skates from us in order to enter.)

Please do include any extra information about your thought process when creating the design.

We would love to know the inspiration behind the design.

We would also like you to include your name, pronouns and preferred social media account.

We may share designs on our social media while the competition is open - this will not have any bearing on our final decision.

What is the prize?

The winning designer will receive £300 cash or £350 in shop vouchers and receive a printed garment in their size choice, once we receive these.

We will select a runner-up to receive £50 shop vouchers and have stickers printed of their design. We will send you a sticker pack.

How to submit the design?

If your design is selected, we require the artwork to be supplied in digital format, as a vector file, for example PDF, AI, EPS or CDR file.

We would like a full colour design (up to 3 colours) and a one colour design to be provided. Of course, if your design is a one-colour line drawing, we will not ask you to create a full-colour version of your piece.

Should your design be selected as the winning design and you accept the prize, Roller Girl Gang will become the owner of the design. Runners up will retain all rights to their work.

You can create your design in any media you choose - this could be paint, pen, pencil, textile, or digital design programmes. We will need the final submission in digital format. If you simply do not have the knowledge about how to transfer your artwork into a digital form, please do submit a high resolution photograph of your work anyway, and we will do our best to work with you to turn this into a digital format.

We can accept submissions by email, Dropbox or WeTransfer to and use 'Art Competition Submission' in the subject box.

When do you need to submit the design by?

We want to give you plenty of time for creative inspiration, so our deadline for submissions is 10am Friday 2nd September 2022.

Judging will be done by our staff team, with Mel having the final decision in the event of a tie.

We will acknowledge your entry by replying to your email within 24 hours.

Winners will be notified by email on Sunday 4th September 2022 and given 24 hours to accept the prize. If we do not have a response from you within this time, we will select another winner.

Winners will be announced publicly once we have confirmation they accept the prize.
